A Shortcut to Understanding SEOHello Friends,
Remember that scene in Good Will Hunting where Matt Damon is standing at the chalkboard figuring out the super complex math problem?
When people think of SEO and the process behind it, something like that typically comes to mind.
But as promised, in this marketing series, I’m demystifying SEO.
Last week, we talked about what SEO is, so today, let’s talk about how it works.
Imagine the search engine Google is a person. A funny, super-smart person who has the important task of sorting out the quality of every website that exists.
To do this, Google asks some very curious friends to help. These friends are called “bots” - think minions but not as cute.
These bots go walking around through websites (called “crawling” in the tech world) and make lists of the good things about the sites and the not-so-good things about the sites.
The list focuses on things like how accurate the website information is, how user-friendly the site is, and how technically sound the website is.
The bots store these lists in an index (think GIANT library) where the information is placed and analyzed along with all the other information about all the other websites that exist.
Then a super-smart Google librarian goes through every single page of every single website and analyzes them to determine which ones are better than others.
The analysis boils down to this…
How well can the website provide a user with exactly what they’re looking for when they do a search?
If your website does that really well, you’re rewarded by climbing the closer to the top of the search results page when a user searches for something related to your business.
If your website is not so great, you’re stuck in a kind of Google abyss buried in the results pages where users may never see your website.
That is what you don’t want to happen. So how do you get out of the Google abyss?
